Using flower strips to promote green lacewings to control cabbage insect pests

چکیده

Abstract Habitat management improves biological control by increasing the abundance and fitness of natural enemies through provision floral resources along field edges or between crops. Among reliant on flower resources, green lacewings often stand out due to their abundance, predation capacity polyphagy. We evaluated impact tailored strips enhancement enemies, especially lacewings, in three organic cabbage ( Brassica oleracea ) farms Southern Sweden. Insects were sampled from strips, pests predators visually recorded crop. In a laboratory assay, pollen feeding preferences Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens, 1836) dual-choice test. The consumed Chrysopidae was extracted specimens, then quantified identified. Flower found attract parasitoids, whose increased as flowers bloomed. Cabbage plants next showed lower pest infestation compared plant control, although no significant differences observed number predators. used feeding, reproduction shelter sites mainly Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth. Under conditions, C. preference for P. Coriandrum sativum L. over Borago officinalis Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. show that could be an efficient tool enhancing beneficial arthropods should considered integrated

Alternatives to Chemical Control of Insect Pests

In 2011, practitioners and advocates of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) find themselves addressing agricultural, societal, and political pressures worldwide resulting from human population growth. This growth brings simultaneous burdens of sustaining a steady food supply; these include preventing losses from pests, dealing with increased human global travel, which in turn intensifies opportuni...

The Feasibiility of Using Modified Atmospheres to Control Insect Pests in Museums, 1993

The mortality of all life stages of pests commonly found in museums was evaluated at 55% RH and 25.5°C in a nitrogen atmosphere (less than 0.1% oxygen). The insects studied were webbing clothes moths, furniture carpet beetles, firebrats, cabinet beetles, larder beetles, cigarette beetles, confused flour beetles, cockroaches, powderpost beetles and western drywood termites. The time required for...

Insect defence: its impact on microbial control of insect pests

Insects are the earliest and most diverse taxon of animals accounting for more species than all other animals put together because of their high reproductive potential and varied niche. Though cellular reactions like phagocytosis, nodulation and encapsulation and humoral reaction through secretion of antibacterial proteins are known for fungus and bacterial invaders, little is known about insec...

Genetic engineering of rice for resistance to homopteran insect pests

The rice brown planthopper (BPH; Nilaparvata lugens) is a serious pest of rice crops throughout Asia, damaging plants both through its feeding behavior and by acting as a virus vector. Like many homopteran pests of crops, it is primarily a phloem feeder, abstracting sap via specially adapted mouthparts. An artificial diet bioassay system for this pest was developed to allow the effects of poten...
